Subject: Historical buildings at Geist area (printable) (send to a friend) | (send to a friend)6
The Geist area is interesting for many reasons and it has a rich history. The history of the Geist reservoir area is no less interesting. It was a tiny hamlet called Germantown , whose parcels were systematically bought up by Clarence Geist in the 1930's, then put to their death in 1943 when Fall Creek was dammed to create the reservoir.

There are only a few historical buildings remained at the Geist area:

1.) The Log Cabin (now the Log Cabin Animal Hospital), built in 1938
2.) The Round Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast, built in 1910
3.) The McCordsville Barber Shop, built in the middle of the last centure, now in a 1970's caboose.

The Log Cabin (Log Cabin Animal Hospital)
Log Cabin Animal Hospital inhabits the oldest structure in the Geist area. It can be considered the only remaining structure from Germantown , because it was completed shortly before the flood when "downtown Germantown " still stood just a few hundred feet away. The Log Cabin building hosts the GEIST MUSEUM inside which is free to visit.

The Round Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast
The Round Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast building (the Swartz-Dunham Barn) was built in 1916 and used primarily for housing livestock. It was one of 226 round barns built in the state of Indiana and one of the few left standing. Most of these structures, due to neglect, have been destroyed. The Round Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast building is one of approximately 100 still standing.
The barn was converted into a house over a period of a decade beginning in the mid '80's. It is the only round barn anywhere that has been renovated into a house. The original barn was purchased in 1996 then it was transformed it into a bed and breakfast and opened up for business in the spring of 1997. More about it...http://www.logcabinvet.com/mb/gvc-15.post

The McCordsville Barber Shop
Have you ever passed by the McCordsville Barber Shop and wondered what it might be like on the inside? The structure itself resembles a train station with an actual ticket window by the door with a figure inside meant to collect the tickets and an actual caboose on the side!
The owner/ barber Mr. Gary Wiley attended barber school forty three years ago. In the Barber school, his teacher made all the students clean out railroad cars in Beanblossom. He had a great idea while cleaning to someday put a barber shop in one! While he started the shop in McCordsville twenty eight years ago, the caboose came fourteen years later. Subject: GBC meeting # 4 at Miller's Senior Living (printable) (send to a friend) | (send to a friend)6
The 4th Geist Business Connections meeting was at Miller's Senior Living Community.

By Tom Britt (atGeist.com)

"Thanks to all of you who took time out from your short week to network at Miller's Health Services today. That nasty virus and the holiday took its toll on our turnout, but we still had 25 attendees! A huge thanks to Debbie and Amy from Miller's for hosting and providing all the food. It was delicious! They definately raised the bar on hosting and food. Sandor's hamburgers and hotdogs have been all but forgotten.

Our guest speaker, Bob Haverstick from Never Too Late, was excellent. If you have a chance, check out his website and his mission. Those with elderly parents or clients could really relate to his goal. Our official photographer, Dr. Gal, was onhand doing his usual candid shots of everyone in attendance. Click on the pictures below to view our photos from today."

FREE COMMUNITY CONFERENCE ROOM AT OLD NATIONAL BANK

This is unbeliavable! There is the Community Conference Room at the OLD NATIONAL BANK at Geist. It can hold up to 25 people. The GREAT thing about it, that ANYBODY can use this Conference Room at NO CHARGE even if you are not one of the bank's customers! This Community Conference Room has everything you need for a meeting: computers with internet connections, table for 25 people, fridge and a small kitchen with coffee. Speakerphones make it possible to have a teleconference meeting as well. The Geist area business people don't have to go to a noisy restaurant anymore to conduct a small-midsize meeting with their customers. Great for home-based business owners, real-estate agents and people who need to check on their e-mails while spending time at the Geist area. And if your meeting lasts longer than the bank's opening hours...there is no problem! The bank gives you the key, you can stay there, just drop off the key at a box after you finished with your meeting. I love it!

A few weeks ago I was driving by at Fall Creek Rd and Brook School Road area when I saw a white tent outside, in front of this shop called Jonah's Market. I drive by every day, I "registered" that Jonah's Market is there but I never been inside. This time I had to stop by because something was going on there and I smelled some good food in the air. When I got there I had to wait in line to get to the wonderful seefood they made (see pictures) and then I tasted some great wines. What a nice place! The interesting thing is that I (we) drive by businesses every day and we don't know what's inside. I really like Jonah's Market.

I have been driving by this cute barber shop for years. It is located in the Geist area, only 5 minutes away from it. One day, two weeks ago I decided to stop there with my son, Alex and look around outside and inside. What I found was fascinating, charming and very unique.

Bells, Whistles and a Haircut Too!
By Jill Supancik

Have you ever passed by the McCordsville Barber Shop and wondered what it might be like on the inside? The structure itself resembles a train station with an actual ticket window by the door with a figure inside meant to collect the tickets and an actual caboose on the side! White barber figurines adorn the building in the front complete with a barber pole.

The owner/ barber Mr. Gary Wiley is a collector of sorts. He collects train memorabilia and is also a jack of different trades such as pen making. He makes pens out of all kinds of materials such as rare wood. When he isn’t cutting hair he is in his shop within the Barber shop working on his pens.

Gary attended barber school forty three years ago. In the Barber school, his teacher made all the students clean out railroad cars in Beanblossom. He had a great idea while cleaning to someday put a barber shop in one! While he started the shop in McCordsville twenty eight years ago, the caboose came fourteen years later. He had just spent a fortune on his daughter’s wedding when he thought about his railroad car barber shop again, only the timing wasn’t quite right just yet due to finances. Then, his grandson Aaron arrived and a few years later was playing with train tracks and a caboose on his lap which he took as a sign that it was time to realize his dream of owning a caboose with a barber shop in it. He then found two cabooses for sale in Evansville, Indiana. Gary states that without the help of Ron Seals he couldn’t have pulled it off. Ron purchased one of the cabooses for two thirds of the total price. The feat of getting the railroad car to McCordsville would be easy, right? Well, the cars were a little worn out and couldn’t meet traveling standards on the rail, so they had to get creative. They decided to load it by crane onto a truck and ship it to him. Going out of town, the car standing up on the truck would not pass under the bridge so they then had to turn the car onto its side on the truck to fit under the bridge and continue its journey to McCordsville.

Inside the shop is definitely eclectic. You would have to visit Gary for a haircut to understand; however, there are murals by Mary Watkins that would have you believing you are in a scene from a movie. There is a lamp in one of the murals with an pull chain that Gary says customers have actually used trying to turn the light on. You walk in and there is an old barbers chair in a room then you pass through to the waiting room where you will wait to hear “All Aboard”! That means it is the next persons turn (be ready as he may ask you for a green ticket).

Even if you don’t see Gary upon arrival, he will know you are there; he can monitor the waiting area from his shop! You had better behave while waiting because only the patient people will get some of his best surprises. For instance, if a train goes by while getting your hair cut you do not have to get up and look outside because he has a camera on the top of the shop that catches the train and you can view it from your chair on the TV screen. The kids think it is brilliant! Kids can watch a Thomas the Train DVD while they are in the chair. There is a map of the United States from 1840-1880 that shows where the train tracks were at that point spreading west but hadn’t reached farther west than Texas. When you are finished with your haircut you will be sent out the back door and off the caboose!

Now, another thing to look for when you are at the McCordsville Barber Shop is the wood work by a gentleman by the name of Dick Goar. If you are extremely well behaved, then you may get a piece of bubble gum from the train bubble gum dispenser that was entirely handcrafted by Mr. Goar. His work within the shop is phenomenal.

Gary sees his shop as a Work In Progress. His love for antiques, trains and people really shows in his establishment.

Gary’s hours are Tuesday thru Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 pm. It will be a learning experience and a great hair cut. His hair cuts are ten dollars each and he is located at 7745 N. 600 W. McCordsville. My nephews who are four and seven years old love his shop and so does their grandpa! His regulars were trickling in around lunch time and some have been with him quite a while!

Subject: Animal Blessing at New Hope Presbyterian Church (printable) (send to a friend) | (send to a friend)6
One of the most memorable events at Geist -at least for me- was in October of 2005 at the New Hope Presbyterian Church's parking lot (Brook School Rd) called Celebration of God's Creatures I just found these pictures in my files and I thought that I share them with you. I think, that for all people who attended it was a very unique and memorable event, people brought their pets, dogs, cats, goose and a donkey to be blessed by the minister of the church.

This was the invitation to this event.

Celebration of God's Creatures
New Hope Presbyterian Church
Sunday October 2nd from 3-5 in the Parking Lot
126th and Brookschool

We will be having our minister say a special prayer for all of the animals in attendance (and those that can't be there). After that, we'll be having drinks and snacks (for pets too) and then having a variety of contests like "waggiest tail" and "longest ears". In addition, we will have a variety of items for sale (cards, jewelry, etc) all with a "animal" theme. Either all or a portion of the proceeds will go to the Hamilton County Humane Society. We'll also have door prizes and raffles.

Please bring your friends and neighbors-this will be a special event! NOTE: Make sure your pet will be comfortable in this type of environment and also bring appropriate leashes or carriers as 126th and Brookschool can be a busy interrelation!

I think we should ask Tom Britt, because I gave the Bulls Blood to him for this 2nd annual great event. I wanted to go, but I have to go to a veterinary conference in Hungary. However, I wanted to leave a very good Hungarian wine for those who want to try it. It is very good wine. Have fun at the Wine Tour!

Many artifacts circa the beginning of Geist Reservoir area on display, including antique maps of the area and photos from the 1800's. Geist Reservoir is interesting for many reasons. For one, it is Indiana 's largest manmade lake, and second largest body of water, after Lake Wawasee . The Geist area is noteworthy for its wealthy and famous residents, especially the reservoir's shoreline inhabitants who include renowned professional sports figures, politicians, local media personalities, and businesspeople. The history of the reservoir is no less interesting; Clarence Geist, a former owner of the Indianapolis Water Company forsaw a deficit in Indianapolis's water supply, and envisioned "Geist Reservoir" to preemptively address the problem - but not without a casualty. Yes, there was an unmitigated casualty in the creation of the recreational and luxurious living locality known as Geist Reservoir. It was a tiny hamlet called Germantown , whose parcels were systematically bought up by Clarence Geist in the 1930's, then put to their death in 1943 when Fall Creek was dammed to create the reservoir. AtGeist.com and Log Cabin Animal Clinic Opening atGeist.com Visitor’s Center
(Published by atGeist.com Newspaper in 2005)

"AtGeist.com and the Log Cabin Animal Clinic are teaming up to offer an atGeist.com Visitor’s Center in the clinic’s front lobby. Many artifacts circa the beginning of Geist Reservoir are on display, including antique maps of the area and photos from the 1800’s. In addition, this will be the location to visit for “atGeist Community Newsletters” and ”2005 Geist Directory” copies.

“The idea for this is to be a community place to gather and talk,” said Dr. Gal. “It is inviting for visitors and people who want to do business.” He stresses that his clinic is a museum as well as a hospital, and he thoroughly enjoys public interest in his collection and the historic building.
